Let the University of Latvia celestial globe shine again!

To mark the centenary of the former Astronomical Observatory in 2022, the University of Latvia Museum plans to create a modern exposition on the development of astronomical research at the University of Latvia.

One of the central exhibits of the exhibition will be the great celestial globe, which was acquired in 1930s for the purpose of teaching the University of Latvia students. After the Second World War, the globe was used for teaching purposes by a Latvian astronomer, researcher of asteroids and comets, Head of the University of Latvia Astronomical Laboratory Prof. Kārlis Šteins (1911–1983). With the development of electronic teaching aids, the celestial globe has become a unique historical object and, perhaps, the only celestial globe of such size in Latvian museums. Its diameter is 80 cm.

Over the years, the globe has suffered damage, lost its colouring with elements of stars and constellation figures, its structural elements are in poor condition, therefore, it needs a substantial restoration before it is shown in the new exhibition. In order for the historical celestial globe to regain its original form, the University of Latvia Museum in cooperation with the University of Latvia Foundation invites everyone to contribute and support its restoration.
