Kārlis Ozoliņš – Emīls Mednis Charitable Trust Scholarship

In 2019, the Kārlis Ozoliņš-Emīls Mednis Charitable Trust (USA) in cooperation with the "Friends of the University of Latvia" has established a scholarship to support students of theology and religious sciences at the University of Latvia (UL).

The scholarship is intended for students of all programmes at the UL Faculty of Theology, starting from the 2nd year of bachelor’s programme studies, to cover tuition fees, daily expenses, participation in conferences or purchase of study materials. For doctoral students of the final year, the support is intended for development of their doctoral thesis.

Number of scholarships:

  • For students of bachelor’s and master’s programmes – 2;
  • For students of doctoral programme to support development of their doctoral thesis – not exceeding 2.

Scholarship amount:

  • For students of bachelor’s and master’s programmes –

1) EUR 3 000 per academic year (EUR 2 000 to cover tuition fees, EUR 1 000 – to contribute toward daily expenses);
2) up to EUR 1 500 a year for conference participation and purchase of study materials (for example, books, computer, etc.). The applications are assessed by the scholarship commission.

  • For students of doctoral programme – EUR 3 000 per academic year for development of their doctoral thesis.

At the end of the term, the beneficiary must submit his / her dissertation to the Doctoral Studies Council of the University of Latvia Faculty of Theology. Doctoral students and degree candidates who are employees of the University of Latvia can receive a scholarship under royalty agreement (autoratlīdzības līgums), monthly submitting the updated text of the doctoral thesis. In this case, the amount of the scholarship is supplemented by the state social insurance tax (about EUR 710 per academic year).

Scholarship committee: Dean of the UL Faculty of Theology, Professor Dace Balode (Chairman of the Scholarship commission), Pastor of Luther's parish Linards Rozentāls, Archbishop of the Latvian Evangelical Lutheran Church Abroad Lauma Zušēvica, Professor at the UL Faculty of Theology Valdis Tēraudkalns and Financial consultant of the Kārlis Ozoliņš-Emīls Mednis Charitable Trust Ivars Petrovskis.

Within a single academic year, the applicant may receive only one scholarship financed by the patrons of the University of Latvia Foundation.
