The Zvejnieks Foundation was established in 1990 in the United States. The Foundation financed scholarships with annual grants to finance the scholarship to the University of Latvia, aiming to promote the studies of Latvian youth abroad for a master's or doctoral degree.

The Zvejnieks Foundation scholarships were awarded to outstandingly successful University of Latvia bachelor's degree recipients for continuing their master's or doctoral studies at a foreign university. Priority was given to the representatives of the University of Latvia academic staff.

The Foundation was established on the initiative of Andrejs Zvejnieks (1920–2001). Born in Latvia, he fled the occupation, travelling to Sweden in 1944 and later to the United States. He was a talented chemist, a successful businessman, as well as a patriot of his nation. While working in the factory, it was noticed that the recycling of the generated waste produces a valuable substance. He signed a contract with the factory that only he would buy waste to develop his business, which made a profit. It was sold when its value peaked.

Support

Scholarships were awarded and supervised by the Scholarship Commission of the Zvejnieks Foundation appointed and approved by the Vice-Rector for Studies of the University of Latvia. Each year, depending on the number of applications, the evaluation of the applicants given by the commission and the amount of funds allocated by the Zvejnieks Foundation, one or more scholarships in the amount of USD 5000–25 000 were awarded for the period of 1 year.

We greatly appreciate the generous support to education and development!
