DELFI Scholarship

Patron DELFI stands among the leading and most reliable news media in Latvia. It is the most popular news portal and one of the most visited websites in Latvia, offering news, analytical materials, entertaining and advisory journalism on various multimedia platforms. In cooperation with the University of Latvia (UL) Foundation, in 2018 this patron has created a new scholarship.

"At a time when the indispensable role of high-quality and professional journalism is recognised and discussed worldwide in order to help the public navigate the abundance of information, DELFI wants to contribute to the excellence of journalist education in Latvia. We hope that our scholarship will assist the most outstanding students to become much better prepared for their work in the Latvian media environment, and in years to come we will hear about them as future journalism stars and influential media editors,” said DELFI Editor-in-Chief Ingus Bērziņš.


The scholarship is intended for those communication sciences bachelor’s programme students of all accredited Latvian higher education institutions, starting from their 2nd year of studies, who have chosen to specialise in journalism or multimedia production.

Number of scholarships: 2.

Scholarship amount: EUR 5 000 per academic year.

Scholarship committee: representative of the patron, DELFI Editor-in-Chief Ingus Bērziņš (Chairman of the Scholarship commission), representative of the patron, DELFI Editor of the National and Business News Department, Board Member of the Latvian Association of Journalists Filips Lastovskis, Dean of the UL Faculty of Social Scences, Professor Jānis Ikstens, Coordinator of the Journalism Module of the Department of Communication Studies at the UL Faculty of Social Sciences Vita Dreijere, Editor-in-Chief of the news agency LETA, Board Member of the Latvian Association of Journalists Pēteris Zirnis, Executive Director of the UL Foundation Laila Kundziņa.


Additional conditions:

  • the student is diligent, shows an excellent learning capacity and is active in public life;
  • the weighted average mark is greater than 7.5 points.

Within a single academic year, the applicant may receive only one scholarship financed by the patrons of the University of Latvia Foundation.
