Business Idea Foundation

The Business Ideas Foundation is the first business grant fund for students in the Baltics, the founder and patron of which is John J. Medveckis, an Honorary Member of the University of Latvia and a American businessman of Latvian origin. The patron promised to allocate up to 100 thousand US dollars of start-up capital, promising to put a dollar against every dollar donated by Latvian entrepreneurs.

The UL Business Incubator, which operates under the auspices of the Faculty of Business, Management and Economics, is the first to have such a fund. This will make it possible to finance young entrepreneurs and their business development.

The purpose of establishing the Business Ideas Fund is to support the participants of the Business Incubator of the UL Faculty of Business, Management and Economics  in the business idea test phase in order to test the viability of the product / service in the market as soon as possible.

The UL Business Incubator serves as a business testing room for young people, where they can test their entrepreneurial skills and try out their business ideas, making relatively painless mistakes or discovering an entrepreneur. Successful companies also emerge from the most purposeful students and the most successful business ideas.

The idea was successfully implemented at the end of 2014 - currently the UL Business Ideas Fund consists of more than 188,000 euros of capital from 70 individuals and companies.

Support for the development of the UL Business Incubator

After the first year of operation of the UL Business Incubator, employees have proved the incubator's place in the ecosystem of business support instruments in Latvia. A niche is a pre-incubation that starts with young people who want to start a business without significant experience and ends with young entrepreneurs who have proven themselves, their business project and are able to continue on their own.

In 2014, the patron John J. Medveckis (USD 10,000)  and „Swedbank” (EUR 2,200)  provides support to the following activities of the Business Incubator:

- Support for Business Incubator activists to motivate them to achieve their goals in the incubator;

- Improvement of the business incubator prototyping studio (UL FabLab) with additional equipment;

- Support for the FabLab manager who ensures the functioning of the FabLab workshop;

- Provision for the exchange of experience of Business Incubator managers with successful Business Incubators elsewhere in Europe.

A set of events for students' participation in the European International Olympiad in Natural Sciences (EUSO) in 2014/2015 acedemic year

Research in the period from 2007 to 2010 shows that only a small number of Latvian students in science acquire the 6th (highest) competence level - 0.1% of students reach it, the 5th competence level is reached by 3% of students. Attracting and motivating students at an early age is important to increase the number of high-performing students who develop an in-depth interest in science and mathematics.

The main goal of the activities is to prepare students for the Olympiad - to create and test in practice an integrated set of measures to promote students' (8th-10th grade) interest in natural sciences, to select and prepare Latvian team for EUSO, to implement team participation in this Olympiad and team mentors, which will provide an opportunity to increase the total number of students interested in science and improve team performance at the Olympiad.

Alzheimer's Disease modeling: possibilities for regulating behavior and brain protein expression

The problem of Alzheimer's Disease worldwide is worrying due to the dramatic increase in its prevalence. So far, no rational ways to stop this disease have been discovered, and some stagnation has occurred. However, this problem is still relevant in neuroscience centers around the world.

The project seeks new pharmacological strategies using GABAergic agents (which could compensate for synaptic dysfunction), as well as amyloid peptide fragments that would act as antagonists of the entire peptide molecule. As recent trends tend to look for substances that act protective in the early phase of AD without waiting for dementia, but manifest as mild cognitive impairment, the focus of the study is on the regulation of hippocampal and cortical protein expression, which is involved in synaptic plasticity and cognitive processes.

The results will be reflected and discussed at the meetings and conferences of the University of Latvia, the Latvian Pharmacological Society, the national working group of the European Brain Council, the meetings of the Latvian Academy of Sciences, and popularized in radio and magazines.

Project support

At the end of 2014, the purchase of devices, apparatus and reagents for the project of the UL Faculty of Medicine in the amount of EUR 7,291.32 is ensured by the fruits of the capital investment of the patron Jānis Priedkalns.

Planetarium

On December 5, 2013, a mini-planetarium opened its doors at the University of Latvia (UL). The word "mini" is added because, unlike a traditional planetarium, the starry sky and astronomical video rolls are displayed on a large, flat screen. The opening of the new planetarium is in line with the 50th anniversary of the former Riga Planetarium, which started operating in 1964 and is remembered with nostalgia by the older generation of the citizens of Riga. If in the past celestial phenomena had to be demonstrated with the help of mechanical devices, now digital technologies can show everything that human imagination can imagine.

In the project competition organized by the UL Foundation in 2013, the project “Planetarium” submitted by the UL Museum of Science and Technology History won a cash prize of 7,000 euros for project implementation, within which a projection system will be created to demonstrate regular planetarium shows to museum visitors using realistic starry sky and video scenes.

This year, 10 projects from 9 structural units of the University of Latvia were submitted to the competition.

“The University of Latvia has immeasurable riches available - nine different museums, two of which are located at Raiņa Bulvāris 19, in the heart of our alma mater. The result of this project will be another great sight for UL graduates, students, patrons and guests. I am glad that this year we received very high-quality, well-thought-out project applications, the UL Foundation will definitely continue to work to help implement other projects as well,” says Laila Kundziņa-Zvejniece, CEO of the UL Foundation, about the projects submitted to the competition.

Many UL structural units actively cooperate with the UL Foundation and implement high-quality and creative projects in cooperation with patrons. With this competition, the UL Foundation also wants to encourage other UL structural units to identify the real needs for raising education in order to benefit UL faculties and students, to be able to work in a modern and tomorrow-oriented educational space.

The UL Foundation organized the competition "The Best Project of the University of Latvia" for the second time. Last year, the project of the UL Faculty of Medicine “Establishment of a Diagnostic Workstation” was recognized as the best project of the University of Latvia.

"In many parts of the world, in addition to educational and scientific tasks, botanical gardens also serve as quality recreation, inspiration, spending time with dear people, as a place for cultural events. We have thought about and discussed with each other when passing the Botanical Garden. Cooperation with the University of Latvia is another balanced step in creating a high - quality Riga urban environment, "say patrons Ināra and Boriss Teterevs.

"The plantations and beds of the Botanical Garden of the University of Latvia were last restored in the early 1960s. In order for the central part of the garden to regain its original splendor, thorough restoration work is needed. The garden would become contemporary, it is not enough with our own efforts and resources," says Anta Sparinska, Director of the UL Botanical Garden.

The Boris and Ināra Teterev Foundation is the Platinum Patron of the UL Foundation.

Improving the competitiveness of UL Anthropology programs in 2013/2014 acad. year

Since autumn 2009, the UL Faculty of Humanities has started bachelor's and master's level study programs in cultural and social anthropology. One of the peculiarities of the field of anthropology in Latvia is its roots abroad.

The industry is based on scientists who have obtained degrees from foreign universities (Cambridge, Oxford, Durham University in Great Britain, Washington University in Seattle, USA). Anthropologists are rooted in Latvia and have contributed not only to the field of science, but also by providing recommendations for state and local government policy, public processes, activities of non-governmental organizations and entrepreneurship, promoting the tradition of public anthropology.

UL anthropology study programs have an average of 50% of students studying at their own expense, which makes the programs maintain competitiveness and attractiveness to potential students. Financial literacy research shows that young people have a poor understanding of both economic processes and low financial literacy skills. Previous projects have allowed students to take a critical look at the field of economics and to participate more deeply in its research and analysis, while teachers have developed the content of the course.

From September 2013 to June 2013, the Association of Latvian Commercial Banks provided support for the project in the amount of 11,400 euros.

On February 6, 2013, within the framework of the 71st Conference of the University of Latvia, the newly established conference hall of the UL Faculty of Law was opened during the plenary session of Legal Science.

This is one of the most financially ambitious projects in the history of the faculty, which has been implemented with additional support from the University of Latvia's patron John Golde, who donated 5,000 US dollars in memory of his father, a 1931 graduate of the faculty, Tenis Golde.

There are permanent translation booths in the hall - for work in 3 languages, i.e. - The working language of the event can be translated into two target languages at the same time. The room can accommodate events with a maximum of 90 participants.

It is planned that the rapporteurs will also be able to participate in various events in the form of a video conference - using a special device to ensure such (high-quality) communication.

UL Faculty of Law Conference Hall equipment - Video Recording

At the end of 2013, the UL Faculty of Law received a donation of USD 5,000 from the patron John Golde. The gift of the patron has been a significant support in the modernization of the study infrastructure of the faculty.

In recent years, UL Faculty of Law has managed to implement several long-cherished plans, including one of the most financially large projects in its history - to create and equip a modern conference hall with permanent translation booths and other equipment.

At the beginning of 2013, at the opening of the conference hall, a wall of honor of the faculty's patrons and supporters was created, and the first plaque affixed to it was to thank John Golde, USA. At that time, the patron had donated 5,000 US dollars to improve the premises. The faculty is especially pleased that with the support of the University of Latvia Foundation, we have managed to strengthen the cooperation relations, which have now resulted in a second donation from the supporter, again this time - in the amount of USD 5,000. The patron allocated these funds in memory of his grandfather, the 1931 graduate of the faculty, Tenis Golde, who worked as a lawyer in Riga and Rūjiena until his deportation to Siberia in 1949.

The patrons second donation was used in early 2014 to purchase a professional video camera and sound system to make conferences, seminars, mock trials and many other events organized by the faculty available to those who will not be able to watch the respective events in person. The new technical possibilities will provide an opportunity to make high-definition video recordings of various events, as well as to broadcast live broadcasts on the Internet. The equipment has already been used for filming the legal science sections of the 72nd Conference of the University of Latvia.

International Foreign Direct Investment Arbitration Play in Frankfurt

The team of students of the UL Faculty of Law participated in the competition “Moot Court of International Arbitration Courts for Foreign Direct Investment”, which took place in October 2013 in Frankfurt, Germany.

The UL Faculty of Law and its students annually participate in several international law student competitions - court games. However, as there are many of these games and participation in them requires significant resources - mainly participation fees and hotel and hotel costs - the faculty is able to provide participation in only some of these games at its own expense. Thus, students actually have the opportunity to participate only in those games in which the faculty traditionally participates.

However, over time, a number of other exciting and promising games have been created in the world, moreover, in such fields of law that it is not possible to learn in Latvia. One such play is the "Foreign Direct Investment in International Arbitration Court Play". This mock trial combines two branches of law about which Latvia lacks information - international investment law and arbitration proceedings. International investment law is not taught in Latvia, but courses on resolving disputes in arbitration courts are often formal and lack practical elements. Nevertheless, students could learn these fields, or at least their basics, by participating in the game.

Support

Bequeath from Sigurds Lindiņš to the UL Faculty of Law

In his bequeth, Sigurds Lindiņš allocates funds to the “Dean of the UL Faculty of Law to use for the needs and benefit of the faculty”.

"I assume that he remembered those beautiful days of youth in a free Latvia, in a carefree and unbroken family - looking to reach the chosen one in the promising future, to become a lawyer and work in his own country. Then came the heavy blows of fate, and everything that was planned collapsed. He did not finish his studies, which probably eroded him, although he never mentioned it. This pain in my heart may have motivated me to donate something to the dreams of youth, ”says Laima Eleonora Lindiņa, the widow of Sigurds Lindiņš, whose wife's wishes to the faculty have been supplemented with her own funds.

The UL Faculty of Law has found a way to always keep a bright memory of its former student. Using the funds allocated in the will of Sigurds Lindiņš, in 2012 the idea to arrange a meeting room and create a gallery of the deans of the faculty was implemented. Just as the walls of the Senate Hall of the University of Latvia are decorated with images of former rectors, the history of the Faculty of Law is now identified in the newly opened Faculty Meeting Hall and its deans can be seen, but a memorial plaque is placed in memory of the former student.

In the future, the funds allocated by the patron will be used to create bronze statues of the goddess of justice Themis, to reward students who are winners of mock trials.

In 2000, Sigurds Lindiņš bequeathed EUR 4,555.

Test site for testing experimental construction solutions for placement in the UL Botanical Garden

On September 20, the UL Foundation signed a cooperation agreement with the construction company "RE&RE" on support for the UL project, which will create a testing ground with special buildings raw materials, processes, etc.

This is the first project of its kind in Latvia, which analyses in depth and qualitatively the technologies and materials used in the construction process from the aspect of their suitability for Latvian climatic conditions, energy efficiency and energy consumption.

The aim of the project is to identify and develop a solution of external enclosing structures suitable for Latvia's climatic conditions, which are mainly made of local raw materials, and allow to ensure thermal comfort conditions in rooms with the lowest possible energy consumption. “RE&RE's motivation to get involved in this project is very justified - sustainable and energy-efficient construction is a direction that the entire construction industry is heading for, and Latvia has great opportunities in this direction.

RE&RE has already come a long way, but it is undeniable that the suitability of raw material and construction solutions is one of the most important factors in providing suitable living and working areas for people and the environment. Just as nutritionists advise us to eat vegetables and fruits grown in our region, as builders we can say that we need to find solutions that are produced or developed here that are suitable for our climatic conditions, temperature fluctuations and geographical features. By studying and managing different materials, their properties and changes in the Latvian climate, engineers, architects and we - the builders - will be able to apply materials very accurately, increasing energy efficiency, building sustainability in general, quality of life and harmony in the environment, ”explains Didzis Putniņš.

Within the framework of the project, 5 buildings-stands will be built, with identical parameters, built from significantly different materials. Priority is given to materials that are made from local raw materials and / or are produced in Latvia and / or are widely used in construction practice in Latvia. All models have the same windows, doors, ceilings and heating / cooling systems, as well as the same air exchange intensity. All stands are placed outside in the same conditions - in the territory of the UL Botanical Garden.

“This is a long-term project that lasts a total of two years and allows us to understand the changes and dynamics of construction solutions. As a result, we will be able to prepare objective and practice-based recommendations and recommendations for construction industry practitioners, manufacturers, legislators to improve the regulatory documents of the Republic of Latvia and the action plan for “almost” zero-consumption buildings driven by European energy efficiency directives. Behind all these terms and tests lies our main, long-term winner - man and the environment” - the expected project results are described by the project manager Dr.phys. Andris Jakovičs, Laboratory of Mathematical Modelling of Environmental and Technological Processes, University of Latvia.

The value of five construction is EUR 13,735.95.

Diagnostic Workstation of the UL Faculty of Medicine

On November 30, the diagnostic workstation of the UL Faculty of Medicine was solemnly opened in the premises of the Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics. This workstation has been created thanks to the funding of the UL Foundation, which has been granted within the framework of the project competition "The Best Project of the University of Latvia 2012" announced in the spring of the UL Foundation.

The diagnostic workstation of the UL Faculty of Medicine is intended for the interpretation of orthopaedic and radiological images used in traumatology and orthopaedics, for the training of medical students and for the development of scientific works.

Traumatologist orthopaedist of Traumatology and Orthopaedics Hospital and UL FM prof. Konstantīns Kalnbērzs: “The establishment of a diagnostic workstation is a significant contribution to the development of practical and scientific works for medical students of the UL MF, which are based on orthopaedic measurements. Using a computerized measurement system, students will be able to analyse different clinical cases, and job descriptions will remain in a single database so that the lecturer can evaluate student performance and, if necessary, compare the pre- and postoperative clinical picture. Later, digitally preserved materials can be used to create internationally important scientific publications.

“Thanks to the support provided of 5,000 lats, the first round of the workstation has been realized, the primary necessary items have been purchased. UL FM plans to attract additional funding for its further development.

The workstation consists of a computer with expanded memory, which will allow to create a long-term database of clinical cases, receive and send examinations from other hospital computers, as well as medically certified monitors with maximum resolution, which allows you to view two projections at the same time or compare two investigations. It also includes a printer-scanner for printing publications and training materials, digitization of previous records, and the RIS data transmission and records communication system.

In order to ensure the full operation of the workstation, it is also planned to purchase an Orthopaedic Measurement License - medically certified measurement software in accordance with international standards, which is compatible with the hospital radiological digital database system PACS, so that the obtained data can be processed autonomously.

In 2012, the project was supported by the UL Foundation (5,000 lats).
